Online first aid courses

Prince Edward Island's Occupational Health and Safety Act General Regulations, Part 9 (in force January 1, 2025) base first-aid provision on a mandatory risk assessment (low/moderate/high risk) combined with workers per shift, from which the employer sets the number and level of first-aiders and the kit type (Type 1, 2 or 3). Basic/Intermediate/Advanced first aid to CSA Z1210/Z1220 is required, with certificates valid 3 years.

PEI's Early Learning and Child Care Act Regulations (EC819/16, am. EC1076/23), s.20 require every childcare staff member to hold emergency first aid and infant and child CPR certification approved by the Early Childhood Development Board — or enrol within 2 weeks and obtain it within 8 weeks of starting. At least one certified staff member must be present at all times.

Prince Edward Island has no separate broad Good Samaritan statute; the Volunteers Liability Act, RSPEI 1988, c V-5 protects a volunteer acting in good faith who renders emergency assistance from liability, unless there is gross negligence. There is no legal duty to rescue and no defibrillator-specific provision, so AED coverage for a spontaneous bystander is uncertain.

Nurses in PEI are regulated by the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of PEI, with RNs completing an online continuing competence program at renewal under the Regulated Health Professions Act (self-assessment and learning plan, not fixed hours); physicians are regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI. A current BLS or CPR certificate is generally an employer requirement in hospital and long-term-care settings rather than a licensing condition.

Prince Edward Island's Resident Care Worker program requires a Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certificate from a recognized first-aid provider for workers staffing community care facilities, where they respond to residents' emergencies and use an AED. A recognized, up-to-date certificate meets the requirement, in addition to occupational training, and is renewed periodically.

On Prince Edward Island, foster parents are approved by Child and Family Services under the Child Protection Act, and a current first-aid and CPR certificate from a recognized organization is commonly required or arranged as part of caregiver preparation — expected under departmental practice rather than fixed by a single explicit statutory clause. The certificate is confirmed by Child and Family Services as part of approval and should be kept current.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Prince Edward Island for personal, childcare-licensing and employer purposes, with certification valid 3 years. The practical portion of CSA levels is normally completed in person.
